A lot of things signify the holidays, and the holiday movie season is always huge. With Golden Globe nominations recently announced and Oscar talk buzzing, a slew of highly anticipated movies are being released within the next two weeks.

Fortunately for us in Key West, we have a gem of an independent movie house right in the heart of Old Town Key West. Of course, I’m talking about the Tropic Cinema with its art deco façade and intimate theaters.

This time of year never fails to completely sneak up on me and fly by at a breakneck pace! It’s filled with so much excitement and fun, and every year I think I appreciate the holiday season a little more… Holiday cards and shopping, quality time with family, unforgettable parties with friends, and a general sense of goodwill to mankind.

Nothing screams the holidays in Key West like the annual Lighted Boat Parade. It is such a gorgeous spectacle on the water. The harbor fills with schooners, fishing boats, and of course Fury’s catamarans drenched in lights.

Dive bars. They hold a special place in the hearts of many. Come as you are, drink cheap, and have a great time. Although not always my cup of tea, I’ve definitely had some great times in the local dives. These classic Key West watering holes hit the spot when you want to kick back without care.

It was a busy Wednesday morning when I walked into the Fury Surf Shack to check the numbers. The phones were ringing, boats needed to be set up, and customers were checking in. I noticed something sparkle out of the corner of my eye, and when I looked, Becky’s hand was outstretched flashing a shiny engagement ring while she answered a customer’s question on the phone.
