The Massacoustics have long had a strong following in Key West, performing regularly at Hogs Breath, the Songwriter’s Festival, and most recently aboard the Commotion on the Ocean. They headlined a sold out sunset earlier this month. I’ll admit, I’d heard the buzz about the Massacoustics for years, but I’d never seen them perform. I quickly realized what I’d been missing out on.
I hopped aboard the Caribbean Fury and met Andy and Matt who were personable, funny, and down to earth. There was a distinct crowd of locals who vow to never miss a show when these guys are in town. We got off the dock, and they began with their original song “Soundtrack of the Summer,” which definitely put everyone in the mood to be out on the water.
The video above features a medley of their performance including some great covers by the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, as well as other great songs that make you want to sing along and dance. I especially loved their rendition of “The Boxer” and “Cecelia.”
Notice Andy’s cool homemade “double guitar.” Matt usually rocks the drums as well as the bass, but with the wind and water in mind he chose to leave the drums at home for the Commotion. The party always gets more raucous after the Key West sunsets and it was another classic night on the water with Fury. I definitely plan to catch the Massacoustics the next time they’re in town.
