Anyone who knows me knows that New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday. And why not? It’s a party where champagne is required, you can take stock of the year that was while making resolutions for the year ahead and you’re supposed to kiss someone at midnight and then dance the night away after shouting “Happy New Year!” That’s my kind of party! Every New Year’s, I make a point to spend it with great friends and I’ve had plenty of memorable New Year’s in Key West. If you plan on ringing in the New Year here, there are a few things you absolutely must do.
Watch the last sunset of the year with Fury. The sunset celebration in Key West is a nightly ritual. It’s something I’ve never grown tired of in all the years I’ve lived here and there’s something extra special about watching the sun sink into the horizon on December 31st. Join us for a two hour sail to start your New Year’s celebration. We’ll have beer, wine and of course plenty of champagne.
Get A Delicious Dinner. There are so many yummy spots to eat in Key West. You really can’t go wrong. For delicious tapas and shared plates, head to the Bahama Village for Santiago’s Bodega (my personal favorite). I’ve had festive New Year’s Eve dinners at Cafe Sole, where the pan seared hogfish can’t be missed, and at Blackfin Bistro, where I love to devour their Diablo Burger.
Watch The Ball Drop. Believe it or not, we have three different “ball drops” in Key West. They’re definitely something to see, but be warned, the crowds around these areas are crushing. The classic is the conch drop at Sloppy Joe’s. If you’re on the 800 Block, catch the drag queen Sushi drop in a platform stilleto from 801 Bourbon. Finally, at the Historic Seaport, there’s a wench drop at Schooner Wharf.
Find Your Party Spot. If watching the ball drop is too claustrophobic for you, then just head straight to the party. A classic spot for locals to celebrate is at Fogarty’s outdoor patio. The Porch has also become a local’s hot spot. For a down and dirty party, you can’t go wrong at either the Lazy Gecko or Rick’s. All four of these bars are within about a two block radius, so why not hit them all?
At Fury, we wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. We hope to see you in Key West during the new year! Happy New Year!
