Fury cats nibbling on breakfast by the shed

Fury cats nibbling on breakfast by the shed

Every morning, the parasail crew congregates by the shed to prepare supplies for the Ultimate Adventure. We load frosty cold kegs, cases of wine and champagne, margarita mix for the Commotion on the Ocean. We sort out bagels, muffins, and fresh fruit, lunchmeat, and potato salad. All of this gets loaded into the back of the Fury mobile and shuttled to the catamarans.

This morning, we heard a distinctive “meeooww…” coming from the side of the shed. Julie was the first to notice, and sure enough, there was a mama cat and a litter of kittens nestled in a crevice a few feet down from our supplies. They looked hungry, so Julie got a little bit of turkey and tossed it in their direction. Slowly but surely, three baby kitties popped their little heads out and began nibbling on breakfast while the mama cat watched on protectively. We all huddled around oohing and aahhing because, well, baby kittens are really cute!

Key West is a quirky little island. People are sometimes surprised that we have a sizable population of both free-roaming cats and chickens everywhere. It just adds to the island’s offbeat charm. For a time, we nurtured a hen and her flock of baby chicks with breadcrumbs when they greeted us every morning outside of the Fury shed. I guess we’ve got a litter of kitties to look after now until they find a new home.
