Kristy and Kyle with fully loaded Fury truck.

The crew gathered at the shed yesterday morning, but this time instead of loading up the truck for the Ultimate Adventure, we were on a mission. Andy Saunders ran the show filling Fury bags with Thanksgiving goodies: stuffing, canned vegetables, bread, cookies, and fruit. The truck full of frozen turkeys was on its way. Scott arrived with a list of forty families around Key West, Stock Island, and Geiger Key. We split up the list and divided the crew into three teams.

Scott and Charlie loaded the brand new silver Fury truck. Andy, Jumah, and Kyle hopped in Andy’s work truck. Westy, my sister Kristy, and I were rolling in Nicole’s vehicle. Westy, always the captain, was behind the wheel and I sat in the front seat with a Fury map and the list of names and addresses. We put our heads together and strategized. We would start out in Stock Island and work our way back to Key West. Some of the addresses were familiar and some were not. We took advantage of our girls in the check-in booth, Kayla, Becky, and Nicole, to function as our satellite GPS system.

As we pulled out of the Margaritaville, we were psyched to spread holiday cheer around the island. We decided on a team name and announced it proudly out the window to the others. Team Dirtybird took flight! We made our way to Stock Island and our first turkey dinner recipient. She was all smiles and happy to see us. Her adorable toddler stood at the door with her and insisted that we “Come in, man.” He was so cute! But we had lots of other turkeys to deliver, so we drove on.

The team spirit was high and after every successful delivery high fives were in order. We definitely saw some new parts of Key West and enjoyed the tour. We also learned how random and confusing some of the roads and house numbers are around town. Captain Westy’s internal GPS served us well on a few deliveries and we managed to find everyone!

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are here and I’m glad we got to start it with the spirit of giving. Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday and take the time to give. It feels good! There’s so much to be thankful for!
