Captain Marius loves Key West’s eternal summer weather.

What a perfect day to be on the water! It was just a classic Key West day today, the kind of day that reminds you why you choose to live on this crazy little island. The sky was bright and blue with a few puffy cumulous clouds floating lazily in the atmosphere. Looking out to the harbor, the water was flat and aqua blue. The wind was calm and there was no need for the sweatshirt I brought with me to work, just in case.

Walking along the docks, I came across Fury’s owner Scott who exclaimed, “What a glorious day!” I had to agree. There is something about beautiful warm weather that makes you feel as free as a bird, and I don’t think there’s any better feeling.

At work, I helped Captain Charlie prepare for the coastguard inspection of Holy Chute, one of our parasail boats. Working with him on the docks, I watched the morning snorkel trip leave the marina followed by the Ultimate Adventure, and I couldn’t help but think that they were going to have a great time out there today. Charlie and I zoomed out to the harbor with our inspector to conduct a man overboard drill, and I’m happy to say we passed with flying colors!

After the morning inspection, my workday was done. I rode my bicycle home, and decided that I had to do something outdoors today, even if I couldn’t spend my day on the water. I decided to take a nice long run along the beachfront on the southern part of the island. It’s times like that when I truly feel lucky to live in Key West. Did I mention that today, at the end of January, our high was 80 degrees? Here’s a sampling of highs around the country. Now, you tell me. Where would you rather be?

New York: 38 degrees and cloudy

Atlanta: 44 degrees and cloudy

Chicago: 19 degrees

Detroit: 24 degrees and snow

Indianapolis: 32 degrees

Cleveland: 20 degrees and snow

Key West: 80 degrees and sunny!
